Abstract:
This case describes the second attempt by Japan Associated Finance Co. (JAFCO), the largest Japanese venture capital firm, to enter the US venture capital market via its U.S. subsidiary, Jafco America Ventures (JAV). The management team at JAV responsible for the first attempt quit in April 1996, primarily over compensation and decision making issues. At the time of the case (August 1997), the newly hired president and chief investment officer of JAV was faced with a number of important decisions: investment focus, deal flow generation, compensation and cooperation with the Japanese parent company. This case provides a very effective introduction to the workings of the venture capital industry and to factors that affect the performance of a venture capital firm. Thus, the case works well in explaining U.S. venture capital. In addition, the case provides room to analyze how differences in national and organizational culture can affect the performance of a venture capital firm.
