Entrepreneurial Value Creation: Are Business Schools Playing Their Full Part?
JSME Vol 8: Issue 4, 2012
Author(s): David Molian (Cranfield School of Management, UK)
Abstract:
This paper raises the question of whether business schools are excessively focused on encouraging business start-ups at the expense of promoting and accelerating the growth of established small and medium-sized enterprises [SMEs], against a background of continuing economic stagnation. The data are drawn from practice in UK schools and, primarily, the UK economy. The historical focus of entrepreneurship education in many schools is on the start-up and early-stage phases of the business life-cycle, reflected in both the programmes offered and in the scholarly literature, which has comparatively few studies on business growth and later stages of the cycle. Yet there is compelling evidence that a very significant proportion of new job creation derives from those SMEs which have survived the start-up and early-stage phases to establish themselves as growth businesses, the 'gazelles'. The implication is that the encouragement of new start-ups needs to be balanced by active support for businesses with proven and scalable business models. The author draws on his own experience of working with gazelle businesses over a long period to offer conclusions on the necessary structural components of a pedagogy for gazelle management development.
Keywords: business schools, entrepreneurs, owner-managers, high-growth, gazelles, management education
