Participation, Majority Rule Voting, and Group Cohesion

JSME Vol 8: Issue 4, 2012

Author(s): David D. Van Fleet (Arizona State University, USA), G. David Flint (Texas A&M University, USA) and Tim O. Peterson (North Dakota State University, USA)

Abstract:
This paper discusses the use of majority rule voting (MRV) as a group decision technique. Individual preferences and group cohesiveness are considered in evaluating alternatives. The example cited is the familiar problem of selecting a new group member from a short list of candidates. This could be students selecting a new group member, managers hiring a new colleague, executives selecting someone for a strategic planning group, or any number of similar decisions. Alternative solutions are evaluated in terms of their ability to achieve a high quality consensus which also overcomes the problem of inverted preferences.

Keywords: majority rule voting, cohesion, strategic groups, decision making, preferences
